Base Block Subtraction

Base Block Subtraction is an activity that can be used with students on their own computer as individuals or as a group working together to solve the problems on a smartboard. This activity can be used with the grade 3 math curriculum to emphasize addition and subtracting that requires carrying and borrowing. The neat thing about this activity is that students can explore addition and subtraction using manuiplatives without the temptation of playing with them in a use other than that of mathmatics. Also unlike base 10 blocks students can trade in the virtual blocks and they automatically split apart into ones. The separation of larger blocks into ones or tens will help students to visualize the steps that need to be taken in order to solve the problem.

Mission Nutrition

A great activity that i would use with my students to meet the needs of the grade 4 health curriculum is called Mission Nutrition here students have to search the kitchen to find foodsw that qualify as healthy choices. Foods that are selected are either deemed as correct choices or poor choices. Each selection provides information as to why or why not the food is a healthy choice. Students will benifit from this site because it helps to increase their awareness of the effect food choices has on their health and body image. The activity provides knowledge in a fun way to grab the attention of even the most resistant students.

Health

One size doesn't fit all. MyPyramid offers personalized eating plans, interactive tools to help you plan and assess your food choices, and advice to help you:

Make smart choices from every food group.

Find your balance between food and physical activity.

Get the most nutrition out of your calories.

Stay within your daily calorie needs.
MyPyramid food plans are designed for the general public ages 2 and over; they are not therapeutic diets. Those with a specific health condition should consult with a health care provider for a dietary plan that is right for them.

To meet the objectives of the grade 5 health curriculum my students would have the opportunity to explore the activities on the Mypyramid website. Here students will be able to create a menue and enter information to access their level of fitness. once students are familiar with food choices and have created their Mypyramid menu they can begin the MyPyramid Blast Off Game. This is an interactive computer game where kids can reach Planet Power by fueling their rocket with food and physical activity. “Fuel” tanks for each food group help students keep track of how their choices fit into MyPyramid.

Science Grade 3-5

This web site Mass and Weight would work great in the Grade 2 science curriculum for the topic on matter. Before we used this site I would have the students answer the question on the following quiz to spark their interest and understanding. After the quiz was complete We would use the SmartBoard as a class to experiment with different weights and masses. This would be a start to the students understanding this topic as they would also have a chance to use a real scale and explore both mediums for learning.

Student Exploration: Weight and Mass

Vocabulary: balance, force, gravity, mass, newton, spring scale, weight

Prior Knowledge Questions (Do these BEFORE using the Gizmo.)

1. Your weight is the pull of gravity on your body. Suppose you step on a bathroom scale on the Moon. How would your weight on the Moon compare to your weight on Earth?

A. greater on the Moon B. less on the Moon C. same on Earth and the Moon

2. Your mass is the amount of matter, or “stuff,” in your body. How would your mass on the Moon compare to your mass on Earth?

A. greater on the Moon B. less on the Moon C. same on Earth and the Moon

Gizmo Warm-up
On the Weight and Mass Gizmo™, you can use a balance to compare the masses of objects.

1. Place the dog on the right pan of the balance. What happens? _____________________________

2. Place the 5-kilogram (kg) mass on the other pan. Which has more mass, the dog or the 5-kg mass?

__________________________________________

3. The 5-kg mass is heavier than the dog, so take it off the pan and place a 1-kg mass on the pan. Add 1-kg masses to the left pan until it goes down. Then take one of the 1-kg masses off the pan so that the masses are above the dog.

4. Use this process of adding and subtracting other masses from the left pan until the two pans are balanced. Add up all the masses on the left pan. This is equal to the mass of the dog.

What is the mass of the dog? _________________________________________________

Smart Board Activity #2

Sentence builder is a great web site that I will use with grade 1 students to help them learn the proper format to use when building sentences. this site offers SmartBoard use and allows students to touch the words that they would like to use in their sentence. after the sentence is constructed the student can touch the run button to see their sentence come to life. This site applies to the Grade 1 Language arts curriculum

Smart Board Activity

The 'magnetic poetry' board would be a wonderful addition to any language arts program but for this case in particular I would use it with a Grade four class. This site activity offers students a variety of words that can be changed simply by clicking on them and typing the word you want. Students will be able to collaboratively use the SmartBoard to create a poem of any style they choose. Students are able to grab a word and place it anywhere on the page. Using the words provided will teach children to use their resources and be creative. Having words made available will also help students that have difficulty spelling and finding the word they want.

National Geographic for Kids

In my classroom I would use this site to provide students with fun and educational resources to complete a research project on their animal of choice. National geographic for kids offers facts and activities about many different types of animals that will make exploring and learning fun. Students would have to research to find basic facts about thier animal and create a short bibliography including illustrations.Click on this link to discover what my students will find Getting to know animals. This project and website will fit into the grade 3 language arts curriculum for the bibliography and writing portion as well as the grade 3 science curriculum for the acquired knowledge about animals of the world and endangered and non-endangered alike.

Fraction Shootout

This website is great for a hands on approach to solving and practicing fractions. In the Grade four math curriculum it displays that using manipulative's is a great way to enhance and cement learning for students in fractions. Fraction Shootout is unique because it is set up like a soccer game. To score a goal you have to solve the fraction. A partner can take the next turn and try to score on your net. The score is kept and students can test their skills with a partner. Another useful part of this site is that if a student gets a wrong answer a step by step solution is given to help learning take place. Ideally I would use this site after the introduction and some prior learning has taken place. It is not essential for students to have highly developed skills to utilize this site but having an idea and knowing the concept would be necessary.

Pangaea and continental drift

Nasa for kids is a website that provides interactive activities that can be used to help make lessons taught more concrete. When teaching the grade eight science unit on plate tectonics and continental drift I would use the following games to encourage learning. I think that a brief lesson using some direst instruction and group discussion would help to jumpstart this topic. After children have some background knowledge on the topic they would be able to try to apply what they know and play the Pangaea map game. This game provides students with a visual of the earths movement and asks that students label the country on the map. Next students would play the Tectonics quiz game. This game asks multiple choice questions to students that will help them to remember key points from the lesson. Students will be more inclined to apply knowledge since it is masked as a game. these games are quick and educational which will help to kepp the attention of the students while they learn.

Foundational and learning objectives for Science and the Common Essential Learnings
Understand the concept and theory of drifting continents.
Describe the concept of Pangaea.
Discuss the evidence for the existence of Pangaea.

Geometric Shapes

Geometric Shapes - Spatial Learning is a site to use to practice the skills needed in the grade four math curriculum. This web site can be used to accompany the lesson in the classroom using manipulatives to make tanagrams. Students will be able to fllow up their learning in the classroom where they used a hands on approace to solve tanagram puzzles by completing the puzzles on the computer solving the puzzles in a different way. This web site will develope the following areas:
Spatial Sense: Develop an understanding of 2-D shapes and 3-D
objects and the relationships between geometrical shapes and objects,
and numbers and apply this understanding to new situations and
problems.
Development of a strong spatial sense requires students to experience:
• construction and deconstruction of 2-D shapes and 3-D objects
• investigations into relationships between 2-D shapes and 3-D
objects
• explorations of how numbers (and algebra) can be used to
describe 2-D shapes and 3-D objects
• exploration of the movement of 2-D shapes and 3-D objects
• exploration of the dimensions of 2-D shapes and 3-D objects
• exploration of different forms of measurement and their meaning

The students will benifit from the use of this site because they will be able to see math from a different perspective, that being through technology.

Whizzball

I played a game similar to this one before it was called the amazing machine. This game is such a great tool to teach children the concept of machanics and the effecte of forces. I would use this to integrate science and technology into the classroom. the great thing about this site is that it is actually a very fun game that challenges children to think in different ways to solve the puzzle. Whizzball will teach children the laws of gravity and momentum as well as force. I would use this game in the grade four curriculum in science to compliment the unit on momentum and force.
This site will help teachers:
To promote both intuitive, imaginative thought and the ability to evaluate ideas, processes, experiences and objects in meaningful contexts. (CCT)
To strengthen students' understanding of energy through applying knowledge of numbers and their interrelationships. (NUM)
To develop an understanding of how knowledge is created, evaluated, refined and changed within science.
This would be a great introduction to forces and energy. Students would have the oppertunity to play Whizzball and figure out various puzzles while at the same time learn some of the concepts that would be taught in class.
After the unit was taught in class the students could return to the computers to play Whizzball again but this time they could build their own puzzle for their firends to try.

One of the items that I found to be useful out of the web 2.0 sites was the web 2.0 calendar titled Calendarhub. I believe that this would be very useful to a classroom teacher as a communication tool with parents. You have the option to place multiple people on the list to recieve the calendar that you create. A calendar that parents can access over the internet to see what is going on in the classroom on any specific day would be very helpful. Once you have created a calendar each item that you post has the option to be viewed by everyone or to be private to the publisher.

Lemonade Stand- Consumer mathematics

This web site can be used in many areas of the curriculum but for this purpose I would use it in a Grade 10 math class under the topic of consumer mathematics in the
Grade 10 Math Curriculum. Students will use this site Lemonade standto learn the cause and effect of marketing, demand, supply and factors that lead to a successful business. I would give the students the assignment to play the game and make a table of how sales were effeced by chioces that they made. the game can play fast or slow depending on how much time the students has. After the student has interacted with the site long enough and collected enough data to form a conclusion on the best practice and combination to use when selling lemonade, they will complete a written report on their experiences and present to the class. As a point of interest students that achieved the highest profit will be highlighted and as a class we can speculate why they were so successful.

Biography Clothesline

I stumbled on this site when I was looking for biographies created by children. once there I found that it offered some very useful material. This site would be more suited for grade 4 or 5 but could be simplified for grade 3. I would use this site in either a history class or Language arts. In language arts I would use this site to demonstrate various biographies created by children for my students. I would allow the students time to read 1 or 2 biographiesfrom the Clothesline that interested them so that they could get a grasp of the idea behind biography writing. Another possibility is I would assign one student to a biorgaphy and at the end they would share with the class what they learned 1 or 2 key points. next I would print off the
Quiz and ask some of the questions that we heard answers to in the discussions. The next step would be to have students pick a canadian that they could research and compose a brief biography like the examples. once the research was complete we could create a blogg and post them on the blogg.

Word Fun

I think this site Contractions 2 would provide students with fun practice in learning about contractions. This is a great site to accompany the lesson on contractions in the 3 language arts curriculum . Students alwasy seem to have difficulty with contractions. To begin the unit I would teach sample contraction to the whole class using the direct teaching method. Students would then have to guess which words matched the contraction. When they have had time to practice as a class taking turns and giving answers then we could work on the web site posted for further practice. This site provides a fun alternative to the written assignment in class decoding contractions. using this site students can have fun and learn the contraction match through this interactive memory game.student scan play a memory game where they have to find the correct words that make up the contraction grade

Guess the Definition

I think this site would be very interesting to students. they have to guess the definition of the word. only one definition is correct and all others are posted by people who have visited the site. Students would have a chance to submitt a definition of a word and check back later to see how many people guessed their meaning of the word. this game could be continued later in the classroom as a group activity. students could use a dictionary to get a definition of a word and make up other fake definitions and try it on other classmates.Fake out. I would love to use this site with students as an introduction to using the dictionary I think that having fake definition mixed in with the correct one would encourage students to explore the dictionary to find the correct answer. the introduction to the site would happen in class as I demonstrated how to use a dictionary. students would then try to find words that I would write on the board. after practice we would move into the computer lab to begin fake out. after some time trying without the dictionary students could begin to use it. after they have had time to try with the hard copy of the dictionary I would introduce Dictionary.com, so that they could see all their options.

Math Fun

This site works on grade 3 math skills after teaching a lesson on addition and subtraction or multiplication/division I would have students work on selected games on this site math fun. Many areas of the grade 3 curriculum could be covered this link to the evergreen curriculum lists the areas that this site can be used to improve. Students could demonstrate or improve their skills in subtraction by trying to race the clock in the subtraction game or become familiar with even and odd numbers in the ghost game. For my lesson in particular I would have a small lesson in the classroom teaching ths students about odd and even numbers and put a couple of practice questions on the board. then we would begin on the computers first with the even number ghost game and then the odd number ghost game. The students have to click on all the even number ghosts until they reach a score of 50. Once achieved they move on to the next level. and then try with the odd number ghosts. the next day in class I would follow up on the odd/even numbers with a brief lesson then students would do selected problems from a math worksheet.

This site is great for any teacher that has to teach phys. ed to their students. I once taught at a elementary school where classroom teachers were responsible for their students phys. ed. lessons. Some of the teachers found it to be very difficult to find new and exciting ways to teach specific skill to their students. When I found this web site www.saskschools.ca/curr_content/elem_obj/gr3/3physed.html I realized how useful it was. As an example I was thinking about a lesson that focused on Locomotor Skills for grade 2 students. This activity called Rabbit Hunt will develop the students' cardiovascular endurance, fitness levels, as well as reinforce the locomotor skill of hopping. To begin this lesson I would have the students play a 2 minute game of tag to warm up then explain the rules to the gamerabbit hunt. This is a greatsite to find activities to do with your students because you can choose any grade level in the search and use the choice boxes to narrow down the information to the specific skill you want to work on. As a substitute teacher I was constantly looking for new ideas for the gym class and I believe that with this site it would be much easier.

Web site for classroom use

I used this site with my students in Yellowknife. Any time we were working on a specific theme in the classroom such as plants in grade 3 science I would integrate this into computer class by using this web site. There is something for every subject and grade level. The students loved exploring the site and completing some of the interactive exercises. there are also exercises to use with the smart board. When we started the theme of plants in the classroom we first had a story about planting and then did a colaborative KWL chart (what you know, want to know, and later what you learned) next we had computer class where I used this site to let the children explore the different parts of plants. This site has matching, small video clips and many other activities that can be done either on their own or as a class using the smart board. In my classroom we used this activity, where the students worked on their own to drag and drop the parts of the plant to the correct spot, pick the right answer in activity, and then move the bee to pollonate the plant. we then followed up this topic with a trip outside to look for different types of plants and where they were found. The last activity that we completed was to grow our own plants I believe we planted bean seeds because they are really easy to grow and grow into a very hardy plant. The children really enjoyed this activity as did I. http://www.topmarks.co.uk/
